Obama Fully Deserves the Nobel “Peace” Prize

October 9, 2009

From Wikipedia, this is under the heading for Alfred Nobel

The erroneous publication in 1888 of a premature obituary of Nobel by a French newspaper, condemning him for his invention of dynamite, is said to have brought about his decision to leave a better legacy after his death.[2] The obituary stated Le marchand de la mort est mort (“The merchant of death is dead”) and went on to say, “Dr. Alfred Nobel, who became rich by finding ways to kill more people faster than ever before, died yesterday.”[3] On 27 November 1895, at the Swedish-Norwegian Club in Paris, Nobel signed his last will and testament and set aside the bulk of his estate to establish the Nobel Prizes, to be awarded annually without distinction of nationality. He died of a stroke on 10 December 1896 at Sanremo, Italy. He left 31 million kronor (equivalent to about 1.8 billion kronor or 250 million US dollars in 2008) to fund the prizes.[citation needed]

The first three of these prizes are awarded for eminence in physical science, chemistry and medical science or physiology; the fourth is for literary work “in an ideal direction” and the fifth is to be given to the person or society that renders the greatest service to the cause of international fraternity, in the suppression or reduction of standing armies, or in the establishment or furtherance of peace congresses. There is no prize awarded for mathematics.[4]

It appears that Alfred Nobel – the inventor of dynamite – wanted a better legacy to leave. Therefore, in the last years of his life, he dedicated the rest of his estate to awarding people who made notable contributions to “non warlike” contributions to the earth.  Obama probably fits in the “fraternity” category, and fits the spirit of Alfred’s final wishes to hand out daisies, unicorns, and rainbows to the world. Here’s why Obama probably deserves it:

  • Freeing up terrorists from Guantanamo in the efforts to appease Islamic radicals.
  • When overseas, he disrespects US troops by not showing up to support them, but perhaps only for minutes to have his picture taken with them for personal promotion.
  • Pulls out of plans to support a missile defense shield for our allies, leaving them vulnerable, but removing the missiles leaves the impression that we’re not “war like.”
  • Sworn enemies of the United States love him: Every terrorist group (who had something to say about our election) came out in support of him. Jihadi fraternity, Obama style.
  • Announces to the UN his utopian dream of a nuke-free world … and says the US will lead the way in disarming ourselves in the face of a hostile world, like…
  • Talking … talking … and more talking … and more threats of more tough talking with maniacal Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, while Ahmadinejad plows on as fast as he can to get a nuke to bomb that “disgraceful blot” Israel and threaten the world.
  • Apologizing to the world for our “arrogance” (that clearer heads would call, “saving our allies butts from annihilation.” France: give me an “amen.”)
  • Ensuring our failure against al-Qaeda and the Taliban by not only ignoring the generals on the ground, but chastising them for making troop requests known. How peaceful is that? It’s peaceful to the world, because when we stop shooting, terrorists gain ground, and we mustn’t offend jihadists bent on subjecting the world to Islam by appearing non-peaceful to the world.
  • There are more examples I haven’t listed, and Barack Obama’s driving philosophy indicates more examples are on the way.

The Nobel Peace Prize is worthless now anyway. Alfred Nobel’s thinking was flawed; it assumes that if you play nice with everyone they will play nice back. History has proven over and over and over again this is not true. Nobel’s logic denies evil. Evil does exist, and it preys on ignorant people who placate it. The peaceful people stand up to bullies and protect the little kids’ milk money, even if they don’t have to actually throw a punch. That is what ensures real peace.

totally temp

If this prize was worth anything, Benjamin Netanyahu would get the prize for standing up to evil psychotics in his own midst. Harry Truman and Winston Churchill should get it for their efforts to thwart the Japanese and the Nazis. The Nobel Committee is being true to Alfred Nobel’s wishes, but it is not being true to “peace.”

I’m no longer shocked that Obama won the Nobel “Peace” Prize.

An Open Letter to My Senator on Healthcare

October 8, 2009

I admit that I’m a little harsh in this one, and in some spots I seem irreverent. But this could be the pivotal point in my life where I tell my kids “this is where it all went downhill.” And we have an opportunity to bring us back from the brink here, so I have to let it all out before the vote comes. May God help us all.

Dear Senators,

I am against this bill that’s being rushed to the Senate floor.

  • Government shouldn’t be in the business of directing healthcare for the nation. THAT IS NOT GOVERNMENT’S BUSINESS. There are MANY ways that “reform” can be handled by the private sector. See Bobby Jindal’s Washington Post article here.
  • 2/3 of doctors don’t support this bill. That should tell us something! The president’s photo op was a farce. This is NOT what is best for patients!! Yet democrats insist on pushing this bad legislation anyway? WHY IS THAT? Is it because you think you know better, and all of us plebeians are stupid? How arrogant. That is the only reason I can see for continuing to push this bill that it seems that most free thinking Americans don’t want: arrogance.
  • The “public option” is particularly nefarious. Good thing for you that big government also likes to keep our kids stupid in public schools. Anyone with 1/2 a brain knows that if a “public option” is in the mix, it will NOT have to truly compete with private options, but government subsidies will consistently undercut the private options until they are out of business. Not to mention all these “uninsured” will HAVE to chose the public plan (for economic reasons). There is NO WAY that Obama would let a “public system” fail. He has banked too much on that, and he WILL use my money to subsidize it, and cause the downfall of the entire free market American health care system. Which brings me to my next point:
  • Government systems suck. Not just the failed socialist examples of western Europe, but right here in America we have Medicare / Medicaid / VA … ALL of these are HUGE WASTERS of money, and every other day I see a new report on TV about the waste that goes on here. If Obama and democrats want us to believe in their system, they should start with these government systems that are in place now, and make them really attractive. As it is, they are an embarrassment, and it just PROVES THAT GOVERNMENT SYSTEMS DON’T WORK. At least they don’t work well. But – given your record – I’m fairly confident you’ll still try to push this “un-wellness” down our throats.
  • I love the idea of “universal care for all.” That is so utopian. We DO care here in America that much. But it will drag the quality of care down and push taxes way up. Obama wants quality care that is affordable for all. But when you add 30 million new “customers” and make co-payments really low, you will have a rush on the system that will crush us. It will crush us. There are free market solutions (such as tax incentives for clinics to cater to a certain percentage of uninsured) that will NOT crush us. And conservative ideas – that have so far been almost completely rejected by democrats – can be implemented gradually.
  • And we can’t just give healthcare to the world. Again, I am ashamed that democrats won’t put a line in the bill about “no healthcare for illegal immigrants.” We just cant give away healthcare to 12 million people. And Joe Wilson was right: Obama lied. Otherwise democrats would have put a line in the bill about it so Obama could be a man of his word.
  • Tort reform. You and your fellow democrats are just money whores on this one. 90% of trial lawyer candidate support goes to democrats, so you just wont cut off the hand that feeds you. Shame on you for sacrificing what is good for America for the good of your political career. Tort reform alone could be the one thing that drastically reduces prices for every single American, and makes all the other health care goals attainable, but democrats wont even put this one on the table. And I am ashamed of them for it. Here is my promise to you: if YOU introduce radical “Tort Reform” into the democrat’s idiotic plan, you will have my vote next election. Lawsuit caps will drastically lower insurance payouts, which lowers malpractice insurance for doctors everywhere, and lowers the cost for every single American. Oh, and this only will happen in a truly competitive market, so I’m sure if Obama has his way, he’ll make it impossible.
  • We cant pay for this. We don’t have the money. “Healthcare reform” as democrats have planned is a recovery killer. I will hold you personally responsible if you continue pushing it. It is IRRESPONSIBLE to blast all Americans with mammoth new taxes (which the CBO has said WILL happen under the democrat plan).

Democrats wonder why there is all this resistance out in America to their plan. It’s because we see through it, to the radical power grab that it actually is. This is not “healthcare reform;” it’s “life control.” The democrat healthcare plan is sick! I’ve read the bullet points, and I don’t think there is ANY redeeming value in it. If you think there IS, let’s introduce some individual points and not go all out to tuck all Americans under big governments regulatory wing. It’s un-American and wrong. This big plan as it is should quietly die.

Healthcare reform as a free market system costs almost nothing by comparison. All a conservative approach does is unshackle the system as it stands from the constraints that make it inefficient. Let’s see insurance become “individual,” “portable,” and able to be sold across state lines. Let’s see radical “tort reform.” Lets see a move to electronic records (and computerized searches for fraud, waste and duplication). Let’s use what works well in one state, and transplant that to another. Let’s stop healthcare for illegal immigrants except in the case of imminent life threatening situations. Let’s free up Americans to actually apply “choice and competition” and show the world a system that really works!

Please stop this nonsense!

Two Out of Three Doctor’s Surveyed …

October 6, 2009

Do NOT Support Obamacare.

A picture’s worth a thousand words. I love this shot (from the NY Post). Obama’s staffers are handing out white lab coats to make the hand picked doctors who support Obamacare look more “doctor-ish” for the cameras. Does that make you want to get behind the monstrous takeover called Obamacare?

Doctor photo op

This should tell you almost everything you need to know:

  • Most docs are not supporting Obamacare (statistics below)
  • This whole “doctors on the white house lawn” thing was for show…
  • Because this huge government takeover of the most intimate part of your life (your health) is on it’s deathbed.

At this photo-op the president lied (again): “When you cut through all the noise and all the distractions that are out there, I think what’s most telling is that some of the people who are most supportive of reform are the very medical professionals who know the health-care system best.”

That is utter nonsense. The facts don’t support that lie. (According to an Investor’s Business Daily poll):

  • 2/3 of doctors are against Obamacare. That’s sixty-six percent, or rephrased, “two out of three doctors prefer freedom, choice, and competition” to the big government regulation socialist takeover of one sixth of the nation’s expenditures.
  • 45% would consider quitting if Obamacare passes. After all, since the free-market model will be replaced with a communist style democratic plan, doctors would probably be able to make the same money fixing up Harley’s.

The American Medical Association supports Obamacare. BUT 86% of doctors say that the AMA is now too political and out of touch with the doctors it represents. It figures AMA supports big-government takeover, they’d probably get a kickback.

Look, your health is your business. Discuss it with your doctor. Your health has to do with everything you do. Everything. It is not just that government will control and regulate 1/6th of the economy if the democrats have their way. They will be able to tell you how to live. Really. Right now your kids can’t go to school without proof that their vaccinations are up to date. Multiply that times 100 if Obamacare is in place. If the government controls your healthcare, they can tell you what jobs you can take, and under what circumstances. Sound far-fetched? What if the democrats apply health care tactics to another huge government takeover project: the environment. They could dictate that it is too hazardous for humans to be working on oilrigs, coalmines or nuclear reactors, and then they can regulate strict (unnecessary, or unreasonable) protections for workers that make producing energy too expensive for companies to produce those things on a cost effective basis to consumers. And if employees don’t comply with the government health-based mandates for those conditions: well, then they don’t get health insurance. Oh and if they don’t have health insurance, Obama’s going to charge them 2.5% of their income as a fine …unless you’re an illegal alien of course, in which case you get a pass and “free” healthcare.

Universal healthcare sounds great because we care that much. But if we do it with a big government takeover, you will regret it with your life.

Can we do it with American values under a free market system?

Yes we can!

The conservative alternative doesn’t require a 1,000 page pile of new regulation that has to be passed in the middle of the night when no one is looking. It’s so clean, honest, and good it can be proclaimed in the daylight. Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal has written an excellent piece in the Washington Post. It is the best, most concise version of free market, conservative ideas that will really work I’ve ever seen. This plan LIBERATES people from the shackles of government, giving them the individual benefits that come with that, and DOESN’T add the RESTRICTIVE shackles that democrats are saying is necessary to accomplish their power grab give you what you need what they know has never worked well in any country where its already been tried.

Read Bobby Jindal’s piece here.

Again, it’s excellent. He says that the democratic plan for healthcare is over (and you know it is, nearly no one wants it), and it’s time for conservatives of all colors to turn the corner, and go on the offensive with a clear presentation of plans that free people to enjoy better healthcare at lower costs and less government intrusion.

Contact your congress people, and tell them the giant socialist healthcare takeover is over. Send them a copy of Jindal’s piece. And – get this – we can institute these principles gradually, one at a time. I suggest we start with tort reform, and I suggest what Jindal didn’t in his piece: that we use healthcare principles that have worked well in some states, and transplant them to others that are floundering.

But you get the picture. It can be done, and it doesn’t have to be done all at once. Let them know you support a free market solution that liberates us, not shackles us, and one that actually works.

Once again, here’s your contact information:

  • Contact your representatives to put pressure on him to reject Obamacare and protect your individual liberties. Complete list of congress’ email and fax numbers here. Another “contact congress” option is here.  Make a call! The capitol switchboard is: 1-202-224-3121.
  • Let Obama know that you’re done with his plan, and it’s time to work with republicans (for real) and conservatives of all colors to make a change to “free market” solutions.
  • Contact the media (radio, TV, blogs) and help them know more.
  • Talk with your friends about the free market principles outlined in Jindal’s piece. Link it on your FaceBook.

I welcome your comments below as well.

Obama: Shut Up and Take Your (Bad) Medicine!

September 9, 2009

Aids to the president say that he plans to be more assertive in his address to a joint session of congress Wednesday night. The gloves are coming off, no more unicorns and rainbows (except for radical Islamic whackos who want to kill us infidels).

He’s pretty predictable, so here’s what you’re going to hear:

  • “We must act now.” Translation: Every time I talk about healthcare, more Americans wise up and get angry about it, so we’ve got to pass this thing before the wheels come off of this monster.
  • “Every American should have healthcare coverage.” Translation: rich Americans (who can pay for healthcare), people who are temporarily between jobs, those who don’t choose to sign up for government assistance, and every single illegal alien who’s already bilking the system, must be forced into my new government plan.
  • “This ‘public option’ has a trigger.” Translation: Heh heh, I’m just kidding about this, ‘cuz the ‘trigger’ is wherever the government sets it, so it’s really, “Take the public option or I’ll pull the trigger.”
  • “You will still be able to choose your doctor.” Translation: … as long as your doctor is the one I have officially sanctioned. It’s for your own good you know. No, you don’t know, only I know what’s good for you.
  • “There will be no waiting lines. That’s just scare tactics from those who don’t like change.” Translation: the waiting lines shouldn’t be too bad, because Canadians wont be coming down here for excellent timely service anymore.
  • “My plan will bring costs down.” (Insert your own laughter track here, because the Congressional Budget Office, Democrats everywhere, and even Obama himself has said this is not true). And besides, it is physically impossible to force every uninsured person into a plan and not have the cost go up. AND whatever government touches it always makes inefficient.
  • “We mustn’t be afraid of change!” (I don’t think anyone’s afraid of change here, we’re just reasonably afraid of the biggest mammoth GOVERNMENT healthcare takeover).
  • “We are at a pivotal point in American history.” NOW THIS IS THE TRUTH.

This IS the point in American history where we either decide that we want a nanny-state that takes lots more in taxes and gives us back a little of what it thinks is best for us, OR we can say “no” to this socialist healthcare takeover plan  – a bureaucratic tax and waste system – and “yes” to free market American style changes that will keep our healthcare system the best in the world while retaining our precious liberties. Check this:

I have heard some of the talking heads saying that some portion of this healthcare bill will get passed. But which sections do we keep?

  • Pg 30 THERE WILL BE A GOVERNMENT COMMITTEE that decides what treatments/benefits you get
  • Pg 29 lines 4-16 in the HC bill – YOUR HEALTHCARE IS RATIONED!!! You can only get so much “care” per year
  • PG 50 Section 152 in HC bill – HC will be provided to ALL non-US citizens, illegal or otherwise.
  • Pg 58HC Bill – Government will have real-time access to individuals finances & a National ID Healthcard will be issued!
  • Pg 72 Lines 8-14 Government is creating an HC Exchange to bring private HC plans under Government control.
  • Pg 167 Lines 18-23 ANY individual who doesnt have acceptable HC accrdng to Government will be taxed 2.5%.  Yes, tax the uninsured.
  • Pg 170 Lines 1-3 HC Bill Any NONRESIDENT Alien is exempt from individual taxes. (You and I will pay for them).
  • PG 203 Line 14-15 HC – “The tax imposed under this section shall not be treated as tax” Yes, it says that.
  • Pg 317 L 13-20  PROHIBITION on ownership / investment. Government tells Drs. What / how much they can own!
  • Pg335 L 16-25 Pg 336-339 – Government mandates establishment of outcome based measures. HC the way they want. More rationing.
  • Pg 341 Lines 3-9 Government has authority to disqualify Medicare Adv Plans, HMOs, etc. Forcing all into Government HC plan.
  • PG 425 Lines 22-25, 426 Lines 1-3 Government provides approved list of end of life resources, guiding you in death.
  • PG 430 Lines 11-15 The Government will decide what level of treatment you will have at end of life.

No, we shouldn’t keep ANY of this! Not to mention the astronomical cost will be a recovery killer. This is an anti-choice, extremely expensive, heavy handed, big-government boondoggle that is just plain bad through and through. There is NO REDEEMING PORTION of the democrat’s plan. But there ARE free market solutions that WORK, starting with tort reform. That’s “limiting lawsuits.” The democrats will never put that in their bill because 95% of trial lawyer donations go to democrats; They will never bite the hand that feeds them, even if it is the best thing for the country!

Obamacare Van

THERE IS ANOTHER PLAN

You’re just not hearing it,

because the mainstream media

wants the democrats’ socialist plan –

and their hero, Obama – to succeed.

And lets face it; the democrats do want their top down total control system to be put in place over you as well. More power for them, less freedom for you. More taxes for them, and a lot less money in your pocket; you won’t be able to afford a different plan even if it was available. But it wont be, because if the government sponsors a public option, they will always be able to undercut the private companies (using your money, I might add), and private companies will go out of business. The only option in the long run IS the “public option.”

SO, here are the bullet points of free market reform that works.

  • Reform our health justice system (yes, “tort reform”).
  • Fraud & waste reduction, which will be helped by
  • Moving from a paper based system to an electronic system
  • Create a HEALTH based system (prevention) instead of just caring for people after they get sick
  • Tax reform (liberating the health system and rewarding healthy choices)
  • Investing in scientific and technological breakthroughs.

Get more details here.

So no matter how the president lays down his “tough talk” before congress, keep your brain firmly engaged, and demand your representatives not support this stinking un-American pile of crappy legislation.

YOU CAN STOP IT!

Contact information is here.

You can always contact your representatives:

  • U.S. Capitol switchboard” 1-202-224-3121. Just ask for your senator or representative.
  • Write your representatives: You can get contact information here. By entering your zip code on the left side, various contact information pops up. A hand written letter means much more than an email, and generally gets a paper letter response (even if it is a form letter).

Read up on the latest happenings that directly affect your life: http://www.congress.org/congressorg/home/

I always recommend contacting your local media (TV, radio, and even print or web media) about these issues. Be sure to tell your friends: face to face, FaceBook, Twitter, MySpace, or link this in your own blog.

And of course, Barack takes your comments (and promptly ignores them) here: President@WhiteHouse.Gov

Get to it.

Don’t even get me started on “Cap and Tax Trade.”

Why Is No One (Except Obama) Defending This Healthcare Proposal?

August 12, 2009

Okay, in the last couple days, dissenters from the fascist takeover of healthcare have been called:

Lets not even get into the fact that CNN is using Communist Cuba as a model for what our healthcare should be.  This is too rich! I just can’t make this stuff up!

Now the point: Nearly no one is actually defending this crummy healthcare proposal! But if you are not for ObamaCare, then you are a Timothy McVeigh, KKK lovin’, Racist, Fifth column, astroturfin’, Anti-American, Birther!  How dare you speak against the “messiah,” when all he wants is what’s best for you him and the monolithic iron (curtain) fist of democrats everywhere. I have a real answer that works coming up.

Personally, I’m lovin’ it. This debate is what American is all about, until dissention against the Big O becomes de-facto “hate speech,” in which case you’ll be in the gulag, Siberia, (wait, that’s germany and Russia, where fascism already got a grip 70 years ago, instead you’ll be in) a comfy American prison.

Hey, one specific point on healthcare and the “public option” (read that Government program).

a Washington Post-ABC News poll of 1,001 adults in June that found that 83 percent were either “somewhat” or “very” satisfied with the care they receive and 81 percent felt the same way about their insurance. “These people have something to lose. If they think reform is going to actually make it worse for them, they get really scared.”

It is true that you can keep your healthcare if you like it, BUT two things about that:

  1. Since government (excuse me “public option”) healthcare is tied to the national treasury, it has the ability to subsidize the “public option” system with means they will always be able to undermine insurance companies. This means that as more and more employers find that the only system that makes sense economically for them is the “public ‘option,’” then one by one they will all slide over to the government system. This is a gradual government takeover. If there is a public option, there is no way that Obama would let it fall prey to capitalism. Some might say, “What is wrong with a government system?” First, it will be artificially economically the lowest, subsidized by you and I … we WILL pay more with a government system, even if other systems are an option, you will still pay for the “public option” in your taxes. But the real point is
  2. Government doesn’t care about you; they don’t have to. If an insurance company fails to serve their customers well, they will lose customers. Insurance companies have an incentive to do the best they can for you. Government doesn’t have that incentive. Government doesn’t even have to give you good care. The VA (a government system) costs 24% more than it’s private sector counterparts. Why would you want more of that? Which brings me to my next point, which defends insurance companies.

Our nation is NOT held “imprisoned” by insurance companies – as Obama said in New Hampshire today – but it’s that our current system in mired in a morass of litigation. Doctors pay huge amounts in malpractice insurance. Many doctors order more tests than they need to, just to cover their butts in the even that you’d want to sue them. Insurance companies are forced to pay more for service you receive at your doctor’s office, because he or she has to cover the costs of the malpractice insurance to stay in the business of giving you quality care and keeping you healthy. But for many, dear 80 year old Aunt Betty gets sick, and when the doctor can’t cure cancer, they sue. The idea is that it has to be someone’s fault. Which of course is not the case. Accidents happen. Stuff happens. And eventually, life ceases to happen. And we shouldn’t award a crying relative a couple million dollars because they refuse to believe it. So tell the masses: we could save billions by just limiting litigation. And that’s just one idea. There are more great free market ideas at www.HealthTransformation.net .

One more thing, about “quality:” Obama himself admitted that government systems are inferior. This is classic:

And I like the US Post Office, and use them frequently. And I can’t believe our president used the slang term “dissin’” in a nationally televised healthcare town hall. I wouldn’t “diss” on the post office, and I’m surprised that Obama didn’t get the quick idea to subsidize the US Post office more, and put FedEx and UPS out of business. And SHOOT, I probably just gave him the idea. Look for a government takeover of all mail related services soon. Just like US car companies, and AIG, and Fannie Mae and Freddy Mac. And expect that if this healthcare bill passes, it will become a wholly run de-facto Government system in just a few short years.

I love freedom of speech. Evil will oppose it (and don’t even get me started on Muslim attempts to criminalize the mention of “jihad” or our own defense department’s use of “man-caused disasters” instead of what they are: Islamic acts of terror). Evil always opposes free speech, because that’s when the truth comes out, and “the truth shall set you free.”

Use your free speech! Tell it like it is! Keep at it!

Barocky Road

June 25, 2009

This is classic. Sent via emial by PR’s mom (Gotta love mom). I would love to find the creator (MORE MORE MORE)!

In honor of the 44th President of the United States , Baskin-Robbins Ice Cream has introduced a new flavor: ” Barocky Road .”
Barocky Road
BarockyRoad is a blend of half vanilla, half chocolate, and surrounded by nuts and flakes. The vanilla portion of the mix is not openly advertised and usually denied as an ingredient. The nuts and flakes are all very bitter and hard to swallow.

The cost is $100.00 per scoop.

When purchased it will be presented to you in a large beautiful cone, but then the ice cream is taken away and given to the person in line behindyou.

You are left with an empty wallet and no change, holding an empty cone with no hope of getting any ice cream.

Are you stimulated?

“The Muslim World” One Way multiculturalism

June 9, 2009

Even if you’re a die-hard liberal, test this article by Mark Steyn and see whether the moral dictates are only one way. If we had a “Organization of Christian Conference” in the UN, if we ever uttered “the Christian world,” OH would there be outcries of bigotry. It’s seems the world gives a pass for Muslims to be bigoted, and the PC thought says we should just sit back and take our beatings. I don’t believe that for an instant. Evil exists, and it must be resisted, just like Hitler. But will we take as many years or a nuke or two in our cities to finally take action? It is an utter falacy that flies in the face of recorded human history to think that we can talk the evil of Islamic Supremecism into playing nice-nice with us. Please visit www.CitizenWarrior.com for more.

By Mark Steyn

http://article.nationalreview.com/?q=M2JmNDJlYTBiMGY2MzNkZDg2ZWM4ZTYzNjVhODU3YmI=&w=MA

As recently as last summer, General Motors filing for bankruptcy would have been the biggest news story of the week. But it’s not such a very great step from the unthinkable to the inevitable, and by the time it actually happened the market barely noticed and the media were focused on the president’s “address to the Muslim world.” As it happens, these two stories are the same story: snapshots, at home and abroad, of the hyperpower in eclipse. It’s a long time since anyone touted GM as the emblematic brand of America — What’s good for GM is good for America, etc. In fact, it’s more emblematic than ever: Like General Motors, the U.S. government spends more than it makes, and has airily committed itself to ever more unsustainable levels of benefits. GM has about 95,000 workers but provides health benefits to a million people: It’s not a business enterprise, but a vast welfare plan with a tiny loss-making commercial sector. As GM goes, so goes America?

But who cares? Overseas, the coolest president in history was giving a speech. Or, as the official press release headlined it on the State Department website, “President Obama Speaks to the Muslim World from Cairo.”

Let’s pause right there: It’s interesting how easily the words “the Muslim world” roll off the tongues of liberal secular progressives who’d choke on any equivalent reference to “the Christian world.” When such hyper-alert policemen of the perimeter between church and state endorse the former but not the latter, they’re implicitly acknowledging that Islam is not merely a faith but a political project, too. There is an “Organization of the Islamic Conference,” which is already the largest single voting bloc at the U.N. and is still adding new members. Imagine if someone proposed an “Organization of the Christian Conference” that would hold summits attended by prime ministers and presidents, and vote as a bloc in transnational bodies. But, of course, there is no “Christian world”: Europe is largely post-Christian and, as President Obama bizarrely asserted to a European interviewer last week, America is “one of the largest Muslim countries in the world.” Perhaps we’re eligible for membership in the OIC.

I suppose the benign interpretation is that, as head of state of the last superpower, Obama is indulging in a little harmless condescension. In his Cairo speech, he congratulated Muslims on inventing algebra and quoted approvingly one of the less bloodcurdling sections of the Koran. As socio-historical scholarship goes, I found myself recalling that moment in the long twilight of the Habsburg Empire when Crown Prince Rudolph and his mistress were found dead at the royal hunting lodge at Mayerling — either a double suicide, or something even more sinister. Happily, in the Broadway musical version, instead of being found dead, the star-crossed lovers emigrate to America and settle down on a farm in Pennsylvania. Recently, my old comrade Stephen Fry gave an amusing lecture at the Royal Geographical Society in London on the popular Americanism “When life hands you lemons, make lemonade” — or, if something’s bitter and hard to swallow, add sugar and sell it. That’s what the president did with Islam: He added sugar and sold it.

The speech nevertheless impressed many conservatives, including Rich Lowry, my esteemed editor at National Review, “esteemed editor” being the sort of thing one says before booting the boss in the crotch. Rich thought that the president succeeded in his principal task: “Fundamentally, Obama’s goal was to tell the Muslim world, ‘We respect and value you, your religion and your civilization, and only ask that you don’t hate us and murder us in return.’” But those terms are too narrow. You don’t have to murder a guy if he preemptively surrenders. And you don’t even have to hate him if you’re too busy despising him. The savvier Muslim potentates have no desire to be sitting in a smelly cave in the Hindu Kush sharing a latrine with a dozen halfwitted goatherds while plotting how to blow up the Empire State Building. Nevertheless, they share key goals with the cave dwellers — including the wish to expand the boundaries of “the Muslim world” and (as in the anti-blasphemy push at the U.N.) to place Islam, globally, beyond criticism. The non-terrorist advance of Islam is a significant challenge to western notions of liberty and pluralism.

Once Obama moved on from the more generalized Islamoschmoozing to the details, the subtext — the absence of American will — became explicit. He used the cover of multilateralism and moral equivalence to communicate, consistently, American weakness: “No single nation should pick and choose which nations hold nuclear weapons.” Perhaps by “no single nation” he means the “global community” should pick and choose, which means the U.N. Security Council, which means the Big Five, which means that Russia and China will pursue their own murky interests and that, in the absence of American leadership, Britain and France will reach their accommodations with a nuclear Iran, a nuclear North Korea, and any other psycho-state minded to join them.

On the other hand, a “single nation” certainly has the right to tell another nation anything it wants if that nation happens to be the Zionist Entity: As Hillary Clinton just instructed Israel re its West Bank communities, there has to be “a stop to settlements — not some settlements, not outposts, not natural-growth exceptions.” No “natural growth”? You mean, if you and the missus have a kid, you’ve got to talk gran’ma into moving out? To Tel Aviv, or Brooklyn, or wherever? At a stroke, the administration has endorsed “the Muslim world”’s view of those non-Muslims who happen to find themselves within what it regards as lands belonging to Islam: The Jewish and Christian communities are free to stand still or shrink, but not to grow. Would Obama be comfortable mandating “no natural growth” to Israel’s million-and-a-half Muslims? No. But the administration has embraced the “the Muslim world”’s commitment to one-way multiculturalism, whereby Islam expands in the west but Christianity and Judaism shrivel remorselessly in the Middle East.

And so it goes. Like General Motors, America is “too big to fail.” So it won’t, not immediately. It will linger on in a twilight existence sclerotic and ineffectual, declining unto a kind of societal dementia, unable to keep pace with what’s happening and with an ever more tenuous grip on its own past, but able on occasion to throw out impressive words albeit strung together without much meaning: empower, peace, justice, prosperity — just to take one windy gust from the president’s Cairo speech.

There’s better phrase-making in the current issue of Foreign Affairs, in a coinage of Leslie Gelb, president emeritus of the Committee on Foreign Relations. The president emeritus is a sober, judicious paragon of torpidly conventional wisdom. Nevertheless, musing on American decline, he writes, “The country’s economy, infrastructure, public schools, and political system have been allowed to deteriorate. The result has been diminished economic strength, a less vital democracy, and a mediocrity of spirit.” That last is the one to watch: A great power can survive a lot of things, but not “a mediocrity of spirit.” A wealthy nation living on the accumulated cultural capital of a glorious past can dodge its rendezvous with fate, but only for a while. That sound you heard in Cairo is the tingy ping of a hollow superpower.
